This is a personal, verse-by-verse walk through the Bible, seeking to teach the whole counsel of God faithfully and clearly. My goal is to slow down, read the text carefully, and let Scripture explain Scripture. Whether you’re new to studying the Bible or have been reading it for years, you’re welcome here. In this episode of the Verse by Verse Bible Study, we continue through the Gospel of John at chapter 5, verses 16–30. The central question of this teaching: do you have the right Jesus?
Jesus is confronted by the Sanhedrin for healing on the Sabbath — and instead of backing down, he makes a series of extraordinary claims about his own identity. He claims equal authority with the Father, power over spiritual life and death, and the right to execute final judgment over all of humanity. His listeners didn't misunderstand him — they wanted to kill him for it.
This episode directly addresses the Jesus of Islam, Mormonism, and the Jehovah's Witnesses, and shows from Scripture why receiving the wrong Jesus means rejecting the Father altogether.

This episode speaks to anyone battling sin, discouragement, or long-term suffering, pointing us back to the truth that Jesus is still the one who heals, restores, and calls us to respond in faith.

"If you knew the gift of God..."
We all spend our lives chasing things we think will satisfy—career, relationships, status—only to find ourselves "thirsty" again. In John 4:10–26, Jesus has a radical conversation with a Samaritan woman about a different kind of water: Living Water.
In this verse-by-verse teaching, Clark Smith explores the depth of Jesus’ promise and explains:
What is the "Gift of God"? Why Jesus refers to the Holy Spirit as "Living Water."The Role of the Helper: How the Holy Spirit sanctifies, empowers, and guides the believer.Indwelling vs. Empowering: Understanding the 3 Greek words for the Spirit’s work (In, Alongside, and Upon). The "Squirm": Why we try to change the subject when God gets close to our hearts—and how Jesus calls us higher.Total Satisfaction: Why nothing in this world can satisfy the thirst that only Christ can quench.Scripture References used in this study:
John 4:10–26John 14:15–18 (The Promise of the Helper)1 Corinthians 6:19–20 (The Temple of the Holy Spirit)John 7:37–39 (Rivers of Living Water)If you feel like you're running on empty, this study is a reminder that God doesn't just want to give you a "sip" of His grace—He wants to place a fountain within you that never runs dry.

What do you do when God leads you somewhere that doesn’t make sense?
In John 4:1–9, Jesus leaves a successful, growing ministry and goes straight into a place most people avoided—Samaria. It looked like the wrong move. It looked unproductive. It looked unnecessary.
But it was exactly the will of God.
In this verse-by-verse teaching, we walk through:
Why Jesus had to go through SamariaHow God’s leading often goes against logic and cultureThe importance of learning to recognize God’s voice and His peaceWhy obedience matters more than what looks fruitful on the outsideHow Jesus intentionally reaches the isolated and rejectedIsaiah 55 reminds us:God’s ways are higher—and they won’t always make sense to us.
If you’ve ever felt confused by where God is leading you, this passage will challenge and encourage you to trust Him anyway.
Because sometimes the place that looks empty…is exactly where God wants to move.

In this Bible teaching, we walk verse-by-verse through John 3:22–36 and uncover what it means to live and serve with a Christ-centered mindset. This passage highlights John the Baptist’s humility, his role in pointing others to Jesus, and the powerful truth that “He must increase, but I must decrease.” If you’ve ever wondered what a successful ministry looks like in God’s eyes, this teaching will help you see it clearly through Scripture

In this study through Gospel of John 3:1–21, we examine Jesus’ nighttime conversation with Nicodemus, a Pharisee and ruler of the Jews who came seeking answers. During this encounter Jesus makes one of the most important statements in the entire Bible: “Unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” What does it mean to be born again? Why was Nicodemus confused by Jesus’ words? What does it mean to be born of water and the Spirit? As we walk verse-by-verse through this passage, we will explore the themes of spiritual rebirth, the work of the Spirit, the lifting up of the Son of Man, and the light that has come into the world. This passage reveals that entrance into the kingdom of God does not come through heritage, religion, or effort — but through the transforming work of God. If you enjoy careful, text-driven Bible teaching through the Scriptures, consider subscribing as we continue our study through the Gospel of John.

When Jesus enters the temple courts, He finds merchants selling animals and money changers conducting business in a place meant for prayer and worship. In a dramatic act of righteous zeal, He drives them out, overturns their tables, and declares that they have turned His Father’s house into a marketplace.
In this passage we explore:• Why these merchants were in the temple in the first place• Where in the temple this activity was happening• The meaning behind Jesus making a whip and overturning tables• The disciples remembering the Scripture, “Zeal for Your house will consume Me”• Jesus’ shocking statement about destroying the temple and raising it in three days• Why many believed in Jesus, yet He did not entrust Himself to them
This passage reveals not only Jesus’ authority over the temple but also points forward to a deeper truth: Jesus Himself is the true temple where God meets with His people.

In this episode we study John chapter 2, recounting Jesus' first public miracle at the wedding in Cana, where he turns water into wine after Mary brings the need to his attention. The servants' obedience and the disciples' witness mark the start of his public ministry. The message highlights both the immediate blessing for the wedding and the deeper meaning pointing to the new covenant—Jesus' blood as the true cleansing beyond ritual purity.
